The entire country of Sweden is now listed for free on accommodation rental website Airbnb. Though a publicity stunt by Visit Sweden, the country’s tourism board, it draws attention to the principle of ‘allemansrätten’ – the freedom to roam free in nature which is enshrined in Swedish law.
The listing features nine picturesque locations including rugged cliffs formed by an ice sheet, a beach with imposing limestone columns, and a sun-dappled forest glade.
“Swedish nature isn’t just a piece of land with trees and lakes and cliffs – it’s a home with all the necessities and amenities that any great home should have,” reads the listing.
“It’s a place where you can eat berries from the ground, sleep under the stars, swim in the lakes and roam freely.”

All publicly owned land in Sweden is entirely free and accessible to everyone. Freedom to roam allows everyone the right to access, walk, cycle or camp on any land, with private gardens and land that is under cultivation being exceptions.

Should you want an upgrade, you do not need to ask anyone, just find the places and the surroundings that suit you,” reads the tongue-in-cheek listing.
Other countries where the public’s right to roam is enshrined in law include Scotland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland.
